Course
Description:
This course, required of all sixth grade students, is an introduction
to ancient world history and geography. Topics of study include the history of
early river civilizations of Mesopotamia, China, India, and Egypt through
Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome (3500
B.C. through A.D. 500.) Students will review fundamentals of geography
including the continents, oceans, landforms, and the five themes of geography
as well as learn about the geography of the Middle East, Africa, and Asia .
Knowledge
of history and geography is necessary to prepare students as citizens of a
global society and provide them with skills and content knowledge for required
coursework in grades 7-12.

Grading
Policy:
Grades will be divided into the following categories with
the following weight given:
70%: Tests- (Assessment) which
includes quizzes, tests, and projects
30%: Daily
Work- (Practice) which includes notebook, in class assignments, homework, and
participation
Course
Objectives:
1. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the principles
expressed in documents shaping constitutional democracy.
2. The student will demonstrate knowledge of
principles and processes of governance systems.
3. The student will demonstrate knowledge of
continuity and change in history.
4. The student will demonstrate knowledge of
economic concepts and principles
5. The student will demonstrate knowledge of major elements of
geographical study and analysis and their relationship to changes in society
and the environment.
6. The student will demonstrate knowledge of relationships of
the individual and groups to institutions and cultural traditions.
7. The student will
demonstrate knowledge of the use of tools of social science inquiry
8. The student will be provided the opportunity
to explore current events.
9. The student will identify key steps in a
text’s description of a process related to social studies.
10. The student will cite specific textual
evidence to support analysis of sources.
11. The student will determine the central ideas
or information of a text.
12. The student will provide an accurate summary
of a source distinct from prior knowledge or opinion.
13. The student will write arguments focused on
discipline-specific content and informative/explanatory texts.
14. The student will determine the meaning of
words and phrases as they are used in a text.
